Winning Start to a New League

On Saturday May 6th we started a new chapter in the Kent County Village League when we travelled to Hadlow Cricket Club.

We didn’t start too well as we lost the toss and were put into bat by the Hadlow Skipper.

Our openers Andy Griffiths and young Harry Bone walked out to face the opening bowlers with Harry making way after a spirited 9.

After this, the runs really started to flow. Andy was the first to reach 50 but was dismissed shortly afterwards on 58 as he struggled to pick which part of the boundary to clear and instead managed to pick out one of Hadlow’s deep fielders.

Then came a long partnership between our Skipper, Richard Raye (84*) and Lewis Bedwell (97).

Lewis was agonizingly close to his first senior century, when, with just 4 balls remaining of our 40 over innings he was bowled by Hadlow’s young leg spinner.

With the rest of the team’s nerves shredded by Lewis’ explosive innings that came so close to three figures, our wicketkeeper, Dave Shutt walked out to the middle.

Dave had discovered his boots in his cricket bag earlier that same day, still with their shoelaces tied together having literally “hung up his boots” after getting a 2nd consecutive duck in the final game of last season. The pressure was on, surely Dave wouldn’t end up with 3 ducks in a row?

He took guard, the bowler took aim and…

Sorry Shutty!!

Dave Charlton survived the hat-trick delivery and we ended up with 258 for 4.

After a fantastic tea, we headed out to defend our total.

The Hadlow opening pair put together a solid opening partnership before Dan Pritchard removed them both with two googlies that both got through their defenses.

Dan got his third wicket with a similar “wrong-un” that the Hadlow batsmen were struggling to pick and ended up with figures of 3 for 27 from his 9 overs.

Dave Charlton also added 3 wickets of his own, as did the Father and son Hughes partnership, with Mark picking up 2 victims and his son, Tom picking up 1. Hadlow were bowled out for 145 after a Dan Pritchard/Dave Shutt run out.

So a maximum 20 point haul from our opening fixture.

Thanks to Hadlow for their hospitality and allowing us to play at their beautiful ground.
